Two Eleventh Circuit Court Appointments Moving Forward

Two of the vacant seats on the Eleventh Circuit (both in Georgia) got a little closer to being filled last Thursday.  These vacant seats, which resulted from Judge Birch's retirement and Judge Edmondson's decision to take senior status, are slated to be filled by Jill Pryor, a partner at a litigation boutique firm in Atlanta, and Julie Carnes, the current chief judge of the Northern District of Georgia.

Both of Georgia's senators returned blue-slips for these nominees, which cleared the way for these nominees to proceed to a committee hearing.  The Eleventh Circuit nominees are part of a package deal which also includes the nominations of four new judges to the Northern District of Georgia, which (like the Eleventh Circuit) also has four vacancies that have been empty for quite a while.

Jill Pryor is widely regarded as being very liberal, and Georgia's senators repeatedly objected to returning blue-slips for her until this package deal was agreed to.  Chief Judge Carnes was a career Assistant U.S. Attorney prior to her appointment to the bench by President George H.W. Bush.  She has a reputation as a fair and consistent jurist, but she certainly is conservative.
